Blender Tutorial 0: Introduction

Blender is a pretty handy piece of software to have around, if only because it’s free and works on every platform so you can always have it around. And unlike Maya, it’s small and fast. Like Maya though, it’s a horror show to learn initially. After you learn the twisted logic that is behind Blender’s interface though I find it to be much faster, more intuitive and more satisfying than other 3D modeling applications I have used.
Also, Blender supports COLLADA export straight out of the box, which you can use to load your 3D models into Papervison3D and the rest of flash — and this is what I’ll be focusing on.
I don’t pretend to be a super Blender guru but hopefully somebody will learn something from this series.
I’ll keep this post updated with an index of the tutorials as I make them. The current plan is as follows:
Blender:
- Setting up the interface
- Low-Poly modeling
- Low-Poly modeling 2
- UV maps and texturing
- Exporting for Papervision
AS3, Papervison3D:
- Setting up Papervision
- Making objects, materials, lights, etc.
- Loading a COLLADA file
Also,
I’ll also look into animating in Blender & the new version of Papervison. No promises that I’ll add that to the list though. I have to get my head around it first.
